General Hazard Information

At a Glance: Hazards of Dequest Phosphonates

Important safety information and an indication of the hazards for each Dequest product can be viewed by using the product selector on this page. The hazards may not be sufficient to warrant special warnings on the label. Details on hazards and safety precautions for each individual Dequest product are found in the (Material) Safety Data Sheets (MSDS or SDS) for each product. These MSDS sheets are available through your local Thermphos representative or this web site. Before using any Dequest product, consult the appropriate (Material) Safety Data Sheet (MSDS or SDS).

Toxicity
Several studies, including long-term feeding studies, have been conducted on most classes of these products. These studies indicate that most Dequest products are practically non-harmful to slightly harmful by ingestion (acute toxicity). They do not have toxic effects other than those resulting from calcium sequestration (and the subsequent effects on bone) and their high affinity for bone itself. Strong acid products such as Dequest 2060S are harmful by corrosive action if swallowed. Specific information is available in the (M)SDSs, and can be requested from Thermphos. For guidance on recommended precautions to protect against any immediate effect of Dequest products, see "Personnel Protection".

Environmental Effects
The Dequest products have been extensively studied for their environmental effects. All products have a low toxicity to aquatic life. They are eliminated in waste water treatment through adsorption onto sewage sludge and biodegradation. The products further removed in the environment through several mechanisms, including biodegradation, photodegradation and adsorption. Specific information is available in the (M)SDSs, and can be requested from Thermphos.

Hazard Warning Labeling
The hazards of the products and the applicable precautionary measures are shown on the labels of the Dequest products. The object of this labeling is to inform the person actually handling these chemicals of any known classified hazards. For details of the labels under EU and USA regulations and standards use the product selector on this page.
